Having quality brakes on your bike is one of the key points to enjoy your riding time. Every ride, especially
in the mountains, is more complicated and dangerous without strong brakes. Brake pads are the parts of
your bike, which primarily goes under strong wear, and you should check them every once in a while and
replace them if necessary. When replacing, you can choose between organic or sintered compounds. It is
useful to know the advantages and disadvantages of both compounds. It helps you decide what is best
for you.

Organic compound
Organic brake pads, also called resin or semi-metallic, are made of a mixture of dierent bres put
together with resin. Some of the materials used in these brake pads can vary. It always depends on which
type of ride are brake pads intended.
In general, organic brake pads are made of slightly softer materials than sintered ones. The result is that
they are less noisy than sintered pads. Organic pads oer a faster onset of braking eect and have a
better performance than sintered pads from the rst press of the brake lever.
One of the disadvantages of organic pads is that they are not able to cope very well with the heat
generated by braking, and they fade faster on longer descents. The biggest weakness of organic pads is
their poorer braking performance in wet conditions. In muddy and wet conditions, organic pads wear o
faster than standard pads. You can burn them (glaze on the surface), and they will stop performing
correctly.

Sintered compound
Sintered brake pads, also known as metallic brake pads, are made by pressing metallic pieces together
under heavy pressure and temperature. Sintered brake pads work in a broader range of conditions than
organic ones. It does not matter if you are riding in hot and dusty conditions or muddy and wet ones.
They still work the same.
Sintered brake pads are also appropriate for racing because of their ability to handle higher temperatures
caused by braking and are also more durable. They are suitable for e-bikes because
e-bikes provide more heat during braking due to their higher weight. Sintered brake pads also do not
fade as much as organic ones during long descents.
One of the negatives of sintered brake pads is that they are noisier than organic pads, especially when
wet or too warm. Another negative issue with sintered brake pads is a more extensive fading of brake
rotor than with organic pads.

Final verdict?
If you are not sure, always pick organic brake pads. Usually, those were on your bike when you bought it,
and if you were happy with them, there is no need to change for the sintered compound. Organic pads
are less noisy, and their performance starts immediately after you instal them on your bike.
However, they can fade and have a shorter lifetime when riding in demanding conditions.
Also, make sure that your rotors can handle other compounds than organic ones. Low-range versions
often handle just organic pads.
Final advice – when you change the brake pads, it is a good idea to bleed the entire brake system and ll
it with fresh brake uid. Then the brakes will work like new!
